In World Cup Fever he shares what he has learned about the ‘Beautiful Game’ from nine consecutive World Cups. \nJoin us for a highly entertaining and illuminating discussion about the most watched sporting event on the planet. \nThe event will be hosted by Ben Fryer – presenter\, journalist and producer at BBC Radio Essex. \nTickets: £12 / £10 concessions (students\, under 27s and unwaged)\nBox Office: essexbookfestival.org.uk or Mercury Theatre 01206 573948 \n  \nEvent Information\n💬 The event will include an audience Q&A session.\n🖊️ After the event there will be an opportunity to get books signed by the authors.\n📚 Our bookseller will have copies of the books available to purchase on the night.\n🍺 There will be a selection of soft and alcoholic refreshments available to buy from the bar.\n🚗 The venue has ample free parking on site. With 75 members the club wants to continue to grow. \nThe benefits of walking football for physical and mental well-being are many. \nOur recruitment currently focuses on the women’s section and we are partnered with the University of Essex to research and develop a recruitment and training model that engages menopausal women into community-based walking football. \nIf anyone is interested come over to the Stanway Rovers stand and have a chat over a game of Subutteo! \nFind out more at stanwayroverswalkingfootball.org. \n  \nColchester United Community Foundation\nColchester United Community Foundation (CUCF) is the official charity partner of Colchester United Football Club. \nThey aim to get the community engaged in the wide range of activities they offer and in turn lead active and healthier lifestyles. \nHead to the CUCF stand to discover how they use the power of sport to make a positive impact in the local community. \nhttps://www.cu-fc.com/cucf/ \n  \n\n  \nJonathan Wilson\nPhoto of Jonathan Wilson © Alil Haydar Yesilyurt \n  \nJonathan Wilson is the editor of the Blizzard and a freelance writer for the Guardian\, World Soccer and Sports Illustrated. He is the author of twelve books\, including Inverting the Pyramid: The History of Football Tactics\, Behind the Curtain: Football in Eastern Europe\, Angels with Dirty Faces: The Footballing History of Argentina\, The Barcelona Legacy\, The Names Heard Long Ago and Two Brothers. \n  \nThe Power and the Glory: A New History of the World Cup\nby Jonathan Wilson\n \nThe definitive history of the World Cup\, for the first time exploring the tournament’s socio-political impact across the globe as well as the goals and scandals that keep us all gripped. \nThe football World Cup is the most watched sporting event on the planet. It has become a global obsession and has been running for almost a century. Yet there is no comprehensive history of the tournament: based on fresh interviews and meticulously researched this book will change that. \nBy 1930\, football had outgrown the Olympic Games. A new competition\, run by Fifa\, would take international football to the next level. After a shambolic start to the first cup in Uruguay – an incomplete stadium\, shoddy refereeing and physios accidentally injuring players – the thrilling final saw Uruguay take on Argentina\, beating them 4-2. \nFrom those chaotic beginnings grew the modern World Cup\, a cultural phenomenon that draws the world together like nothing else. \nThere has never been a comprehensive history of the World Cup that has considered not only the matches and goals\, the players and coaches\, the tales of scandal and genius\, the haggling and skulduggery of the bidding process\, but has also placed the tournaments within a socio-political framework. The story of the World Cup is also the story of the world; this book tells its definitive history. \n‘Meticulously researched and well-organised – an informative account of how the World Cup became the global event it is today.’\n– Jamie Carragher \n‘Jonathan Wilson is a master at telling football’s greatest ever stories…Breathtaking. Wilson’s eye for detail and his elegant writing brings the World Cup to life like no other book on the topic I have ever read’\n– Elis James \n‘A history of the World Cup that is also a four yearly temperature check on the history of the entire world. Epic in scope\, awesomely rich in detail\, and compulsively entertaining.’\n– Tom Holland \n‘An outstanding book by a truly outstanding writer’\n– Duncan Hamilton \n‘So much of what we know of football’s history we know thanks to Wilson…the game is lucky to have him’\n– Simon Kuper \n  \nOrder a hardback copy of the book from bookshop.org. \nPre-order a paperback copy of the book from bookshop.org – released on 7 May 2026 \n  \nSimon Kuper\nPhoto of Simon Kuper © Leila Kuper \n \nSimon Kuper is a British author and journalist for the Financial Times. Kuper was born in Uganda of South African parents in 1969\, and moved to the Netherlands as a child. He studied History and German at Oxford University\, and attended Harvard University as a Kennedy Scholar. He has written for the Observer\, The Times and the Guardian\, and also writes regularly for Dutch newspapers. He lives in Paris with his family. \n  \nWorld Cup Fever: A Footballing Journey in Nine Tournaments\nby Simon Kuper\n \n  \nThe football World Cup is the biggest sporting competition on Earth – a chance every four years for the greatest players to win international glory\, and a month-long media spectacle that’s watched by an audience of billions. \nBut the tournament has changed beyond recognition since the inaugural event in Montevideo\, Uruguay\, in July 1930. What was once a semi-professional meeting beset by haphazard play has evolved to become a game of multinational buyouts\, dubious ethics and questionable aims – and the new era of football has much to tell us about the globalised world. \nSimon Kuper is among the vanishingly small number of writers who have attended every World Cup since 1990. The World at My Feet is his journey to find the heart of football\, through the nine tournaments he’s experienced first-hand – from watching matches in half-empty stands during Italia 90\, a tournament that at times felt like a village fete\, to witnessing the French triumph at home in 1998\, South Africa’s national dream in 2010 and the troubling legacy of Qatar 2022. \nTold on the pitch and in the stands\, and in the pubs\, front rooms and on the streets\, this is the story of how football has changed the world. \nOrder a hardback copy of the book from bookshop.org. \n  \n  \n  \n     \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n

Though separated in age by three decades\, the pair are kindred spirits – torn between their commitment to religion and their desire for more. \nBut their friendship is threatened by the arrival of love. \nThomas falls for James Bower\, who runs the local museum. Together they develop an obsession with the vanished nineteenth-century female astronomer Maria Veduva\, said to haunt a nearby manor\, and whose startling astronomical discoveries may never have been acknowledged. \nInspired by Maria\, and the dawning realisation James may not reciprocate his feelings\, Thomas finds solace studying the night skies. Could astronomy offer as much wonder as divine or earthly love? \nMeanwhile Grace meets Nathan\, a fellow sixth former who represents a different\, wilder kind of life. They are drawn passionately together\, but quickly pulled apart\, casting Grace into the wider world and far away from Thomas. \nIn time\, the mysteries of Aldleigh are revealed\, bringing Thomas and Grace back to each other and to a richer understanding of love\, of the nature of the world\, and the sheer miracle of being alive. \n‘Sarah Perry has the rare gift of committing the uncommittable to prose – that is to say: here is a writer who understands life.’\n– Jessie Burton\, author of The Miniaturist \n  \n  \nAbout the Author\nSarah Perry is the internationally best-selling author of the novels Melmoth\, The Essex Serpent and After Me Comes the Flood\, and the non-fiction Essex Girls. She is a winner of the Waterstone’s Book of the Year Award and the British Book of the Year Award and has been nominated for major literary prizes including the Women’s Prize for Fiction\, the Dylan Thomas Prize\, the Folio Prize and the Costa Novel Award. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has a PhD in Creative Writing. \n  \n \nPhoto of Sarah Perry © Sophie Davidson\n  \n \n

Courtesy of Saqi Books\n  \n\n  \nWoman Life Freedom edited by Malu Halasa\nPublished September 2023 \n \nOrder a copy of Woman Life Freedom at bookshop.org \nJina Mahsa Amini’s death at the hands of Iran’s Morality Police on 16 September 2022 sparked widespread protests across the country. Women took to the streets\, uncovering their hair\, burning headscarves and chanting ‘Woman Life Freedom’ – ‘Zan Zendegi Azadi’ in Persian and ‘Jin Jîyan Azadî’ in Kurdish – in mass demonstrations. An explosion of creative resistance followed as art and photography shared online went viral and people around the world saw what was really going on in Iran. \nWoman Life Freedom captures this historic moment in artwork and first-person accounts. This striking collection goes behind the scenes at forbidden fashion shows; records the sound of dissent in Iran where it is illegal for women to sing unaccompanied in public; and walks the streets of Tehran with ‘The Smarties’ – Gen Z women who colour and show their hair in defiance of the authorities\, despite the potentially devastating consequences. Extolling the power of art\, writing and body politics – both female and queer – this collection is a universal rallying call and a celebration of the women the regime has tried and failed to silence. \nThis is what protest looks like. \n  \n  \nAbout the Author\nMalu Halasa is the editor of eight anthologies on Middle Eastern art and culture. Her edited volumes include the critically acclaimed Syria Speaks: Art and Culture from the Frontline\, Woman Life Freedom: Voices and Art from the Women’s Protests in Iran and The Secret Life of Syrian Lingerie: Intimacy and Design. Halasa has written for The Guardian\, Financial Times and Times Literary Supplement. She was previously an editor at the Prince Claus Fund in Amsterdam\, Editor-at-Large for Portal 9 in Beirut\, Lebanon\, and a founding editor of Tank Magazine in London. She is currently the literary editor at Middle Eastern arts magazine The Markaz Review. \n \nPhoto of Malu Halasa © Priscilla Briggs\n  \n \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n
